Acknowledgments

As an author, it’s customary to thank everyone who helped you get from a spark of an idea to a finished book. Typically listed under a heading called Acknowledgements, authors thank readers, friends and family, editors, agents, pets, high school English teachers, and that one guy who said I’d never write a book and ha ha! Look at me now.

But I digress.

The Trail Rules is my sixth published novel, which means I’ve written six acknowledgment sections, but it occurred to me that I never TELL anyone they’re in there. Part of me figures it’s a good way to know who’s read my book. If they mention it, then I know, and if not, well, maybe they don’t get thanked next time. (I KID.) (Sort of). So I’ve decided to share my acknowledgments here to give an extra shout-out to everyone who helped make this book a reality.

(Also, I realize I’ve spelled it wrong in my book. This is amazing.)

*clears throat*

  • Laura Holmes is a local friend who, in addition to being a writer (among other things), is an avid cyclist. She patiently answered my questions, gave me insight into what happens on the trails, and told me what turned out to be my favorite line from the book.
  • I’m in at least a dozen Facebook writing groups, and the wisdom and intricacies about the publishing industry I’ve picked up there have been invaluable.
  • My group of beta readers (people who read and critique your manuscript before it’s ready for mass consumption) has changed over the years, but I’m always grateful to everyone who takes time to help me. Bridgid Gallagher‘s books are positively adorable and I love her perspective on my romance. Patrick Hodges has a keen eye for errors for which I’m eternally grateful. And we met in person a couple weeks ago! Tammy Ruch is a local middle school teacher whose perspective on young minds is VERY helpful. And my mom, Judy Hooyenga, is the best proofreader around.
  • Nancy Matuszak is an editor by trade (albeit for textbooks) and she’s always challenged me to push my characters farther and go deeper with the story.
  • Nadine Nettmann and Sara Spock Carlson are my two dearest friends. They’ve held my hand through personal turmoil, encouraged me with my writing, and helped me brainstorm when I just can’t figure out a scene—almost all via text. I seriously couldn’t imagine my life without them, and that’s why this book is also dedicated to them.
  • And finally, my husband Jeremy. I don’t talk about him much on my blog because I like to keep this focused on my writing career, but knowing he’s got my back through all this makes it easier to keep plugging away. He’s the best Business Manager I could ask for.

Reminder: The Trail Rules comes out March 9!
