Welcome to a special edition of the Getting to Know… series. Today’s guest is Emmy, the main character in my short story, Sunflowers and Lavender, which is part of the romance anthology, LOVE ON MAIN. The anthology comes out on February 11, 2020 and this interview is part of a series of main character interviews.
Let’s get started! Tell us a little about yourself.
I’m seventeen and about to be a senior in high school. I’m not as outgoing as my best friend Raina, but I love hanging out with my friends and sometimes I even go along with the crazy schemes they come up with. I’m from a small Michigan town along Lake Michigan and I absolutely love painting. I’ve taken art for as long as I can remember, and while I know it’s not the most practical thing, I’d love to do something with my art when I’m grown up.
Now for the fun stuff!
What’s your favorite thing about painting?
I love the way the smell of the paint kind of envelops me and takes me to another place. Everything else that I’m worried about melts away and I can be just me.
What’s the hardest part of painting for you?
Worrying that I’m good enough. Sometimes I procrastinate because I worry that the final painting isn’t going to match the image in my head, so instead of working on it, I slow down. But I’m trying to be better about that. I’m also trying to stop comparing myself to other artists, especially while I’m working on a piece. Nothing good can come from that.
What’s something that you makes you unhappy?
Feeling [LEFT] behind. I’m not as courageous as my best friend Raina and sometimes I feel like I’m holding her back. Like the time we were out on the pier and she tried to get me to jump off. It’s practically a right of passage to jump off the pier in the summer, but… but I just can’t. She’s braver than me, and patient, and she usually knows what’s best for me, but I just couldn’t do it. So she jumped with another group of kids, leaving me alone on the pier.
What’s something—besides painting—that makes you happy?
Seeing my friends happy. Getting ice cream after work and being in the middle of the activity without having to be the center of attention. Being close to a boy who smells really good.
Who’s your biggest cheerleader?
Raina, for sure. I used to say Lucas, but things have changed with us and now I’m not really sure what to think of him. He destroyed my spring art project and I don’t know if I can forgive him for that. Raina thinks I should talk to him, but what’s there to talk about, right? So I have Raina, and that’s enough.
Now I’d like to play a fun little game called This or That. As a writer, I find that a lot of interviews ask the same questions, so I always appreciate sharing something new about myself. I’m super excited about these questions—and I hope you enjoy them!
Introvert or extrovert? Introvert. My best friend Raina is the extra to my introvertedness.
Morning or night person? Night, for sure. But what teenager isn’t?
Coffee or tea? I’m not really a coffee person even though Raina swears by it. Truthfully, iced tea.
Sweet or salty? Sweet. I could eat ice cream every day.
Eternal summer or four seasons? Four seasons. Summer is awesome, but I think each season makes us appreciate the next one.
Mountains or beach? Beach. For sure.
Dogs or cats? Dogs. I mean, I like cats and all, but I prefer a pet that is always happy to see me.
Over 5’5” or under? Ha! I’m 5’5” exactly.
Left or right-handed? I’m right-handed.
Hoodie or yoga pants? Yoga pants, because you can wear them year-round. Sometimes it’s too hot for a hoodie.
Thank you so much for spending this time with us! Is there anything else you’d like to add?
I really appreciate you having me!
