Not All Tropes Are Bad

If you’ve spent any time in bookstagram, bookthreads, or any of the book-themed social spaces, you’ve probably seen a graphic featuring a book cover surrounded by short phrases and cutesy arrows pointing to the book. These graphics provide readers an at-a-glance summary of what themes they can expect in the book, and oftentimes these images include details that might be left out of the “official” book description, which makes them a valuable piece of a marketing plan.

Ahem, I mean they’re adorable and I want one.

Kidnapped twin. Relationship of convenience. Lake Michigan love. Unthinkable secrets. Friends quotes. Mental health. Dysfunctional family. Unreliable narrator.

So what do these mean? I’m going to break them down for you.

Kidnapped Twin

The entire premise of the book is based on Eve’s twin sister, Gen, disappearing when they were one month old.

Relationship of Convenience

Eve’s been dating Cal for months and while he knows her better than just about anyone, she refuses to commit. Despite her unwillingness to open up to him, he’s important to her and she doesn’t want to hurt him.

Lake Michigan Love

Eve lives half a mile from Lake Michigan and it’s her favorite place to run. The different ‘moods’ of the lake often reflect how she’s feeling, and she seeks solace there during the darkest moments of her life.

Mental Health

Eve’s mom had a mental break when Gen disappeared, and rather than get her the help she so clearly needed, Eve’s father raised Eve as both girls to ease her mother’s mind. By the time readers meet Eve, she clearly needs therapy but refuses to tell anyone her secret.

Unthinkable Secrets

No one can know the truth about Eve’s life and the way she helps deceive her mom. She’s spent her entire life pushing people away, but she’s about to find out that may not be enough.

F.R.I.E.N.D.S. Quotes

Eve’s mom loves her FRIENDS and watches the show on an endless loop. Eve and her mom know the words to ALL the episodes (just like a certain author).

Dysfunctional Family

Kidnapped sister, Mom who can’t accept reality, remaining daughter who does whatever she can to keep her mom happy, and Dad who pulls all their strings. I could say more, but that would ruin the surprise!

Unreliable Narrator

Eve is smart, stubborn, and believes she knows everything. And she hopes you believe that too.
