Book of Good

3 journals side by side on wood table top

The Book of Good is a guided journal for people who want to find the good in each day. Appropriate for all ages—from adults to teens to parents and children—this journal encourages you to write three good things that happened each day. Each spread has three lines for each day, then space to highlight the three best things for that week.

The Book of Good: Pride

In the two years since I first published The Book of Good, I’ve heard from countless people how focusing on the good in each day and tuning out the negativity, even if just for a short time, has helped them cope with everything going on in their lives and in the world.

It’s always been my intention to have 3 versions of the journal, but I didn’t want to rush the third design. My hope was that it would come to me when the time was right.

I’m donating $1 of every sale of The Book of Good: Pride to Out on the Lakeshore, a local (to me) organization whose mission is to provide a constant source of support and understanding to the LGBTQ community of the greater Holland area. They seek to create a community in which all persons are afforded equal rights and opportunities.

The journals are available on Amazon, or you can buy one from me in person via my contact page.

The story behind the Book of Good

In 2011, when I was severely depressed and felt that therapy and medication weren’t enough to get me through the hours, days, weeks that stretched ahead, I started a journal called the Book of Good. On the first page I challenged myself to write down at least three good things that happened each day. Every day. It could be as monumental as winning the lottery or as small as the joy my dog brings me when we played after work. No matter how low my mood, odds were something made me smile, even if for only a second, and even if it was only on the inside.

Over time, I found myself looking for good throughout the day. It didn’t stop the negatives from happening, but I retrained my brain to stop dwelling on the negatives that were out of my control and to focus on the good things that remind me why I get out of bed every morning. This doesn’t mean I completely blocked out the world around me, but I got better at not letting the negatives overwhelm me.

Now I’ve created The Book of Good—a journal to help you find the good in each day. I hope you find it as helpful as I have.
